HERE'S A RECAP OF NCTE 2023!
#NCTE23 was one of the highlights of 2023 for me! It's equivalent to Comic-Con, but for teachers, educators, school librarians, authors, illustrators, publishers, and all sorts of entities catering to the educational market. If you're an author or illustrator, it's THE place to be.
A space to celebrate teachers, the work they do for our students, and to learn best practices in and out of the classroom.
This year's theme was CONEXIONES, connections. It carried through everything I did while at the conference. Connecting with old friends. Connecting with new friends. Connecting with educators personally and professionally! #NCTE23 was my second time attending the National Teachers of English Conference.
I was grateful to be on three panels and participated in the Classroom Idea Exchange. The panels I was a part of were topics I was passionate about and am humbled to have been afforded the opportunity to be on panels with colleagues and educators who advocate for literacy and inclusivity. It's also a space to network with the very people who value the books we create and allow us to connect and learn from each other.
NCTE is also a great space for authors, illustrators, and creatives to connect with their marketing teams and publishers.
2022 was my first year there. I was invited to be on a panel, by my agency mate, Anne Nesbet, and I was hooked. The energy is frenetic, but it's a great space for making connections with the people closest to the audience we are writing for. And to learn what their needs are for teaching in the classroom.
As a second timer, I had learned some tips and tricks to make it through without feeling too overwhelmed this time around. I was able to go off-site. I ventured out into the city with friends, participated in a book signing at Barnes and Nobles Easton, and EVEN found myself a DUNKIN DONUTS!!
Yes, as Authors Jyoti Rajan Gopal and Meera Sriram can attest... It was a 'STOP THE UBER!' moment when I asked our uber driver, Sean, to pitstop at the DDs drive thru on the way to the Asian American Caucus Dinner. I think our driver, thought we were his funnest fare for the night!
As I wind down from all the excitement of this year, I'm definitely making plans to return to #NCTE24, especially because it's going to be in my hometown of Boston!
I have some ideas in mind for proposals that I'll be working on with some author and educator friends that align well with next year's theme of Heart, Hope, and Humanity. My second title, A VOICE OF HOPE: THE MYRLIE EVERS WILLIAMS STORY will have released in time for the conference. It would be such a dream to finally get to do a signing at NCTE with this book, because of its significance and theme tie-in., and I'd be signing a book in my hometown. That would be such an honor and incredible, full circle moment!
Looking forward to #NCTE24!
